Origin & Nature

Indeed though Bes was among the most popular gods of ancient Egypt, no story of his origin has been set up. He shares parallels with at least nine other deities. He wasn't a god in the same sense that Osiris or Thoth was, had no temple( except one guarding the grapes of the croft at the Baharia Oasis), and no formal deification, but was recognized in the homes of the Egyptians from the time of the Old Kingdom(c. 2613-c. 2181 BCE) through the Ptolemaic Dynasty( 323- 30 BCE) and on into the Roman Empire, although his fashionability is most wide from the New Kingdom of Egypt( 1570- 1069 BCE) onwards. His role as protection of children expanded to the protection of anyone who placed themselves under his care and Egyptian( and after Roman) dogfaces had images of Bes inscribed on their securities and would drink from Bes- engraved glasses previous to the battle.
